Outdoor Learning is a way to use your grounds or outdoor space for teaching, learning and play. Outdoor learning is experiential active learning, its learning through discovery, feedback and reflection. Outdoor Learning is outcome led, a lesson outdoors or a whole school event.
What are the benefits to Outdoor Learning?
Outdoor Learning helps to raise self esteem, it is memorable and involves practical problem solving. Outdoor Learning can present information in a way that engages and develops understanding. Outdoor Learning can engage the hard to reach. It can help young people connect with the environment, and develop social and emotional wellbeing. You can teach a wide range of topics linking the curriculum to outdoor learning including Math, English, Literacy, Science, History and much much more. You can use Outdoor Learning to deliver everything from early years to lifelong learning and health outcomes!

Outdoor Learning Taster Sessions
Muddy Feet can come a deliver twilight or half day taster sessions on your grounds. These sessions can be tailored to different areas of the curriculum depending on your needs. These can be delivered to staff or a class. Sessions may include introductory activities for outdoor math, literacy or science.

Outdoor Learning Event
Muddy Feet training can come and deliver a full themed outdoor learning event day, this can be tailored to your desired outcomes. For example we have delivered literacy days for primary schools and training days for health walk leaders. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

OCN Level 2 Award in Outdoor Learning Practice
This two day course is aimed at those wishing to gain confidence to teach outdoors safely, using natural resources . This is an OCN accredited course and is worth 5 credits and usually takes 6 months to complete. You will be required to deliver 4 Outdoor Learning sessions and complete a portfolio to provide evidence for the following units
- Sustainable Use of Natural Resources
- Outdoor Learning Practitioner

OCN Level 3 Award in Leading the Outdoor Learning Curriculum
This two day course is designed for those who have completed the L2 Outdoor Learning Award are coordinating Outdoor Learning in their organisation. This course looks at the context behind Outdoor Learning, how to embed this as a whole school strategy, how to plan for year round activity and how to cascade knowledge and enthuse others to get outside the classroom. The course includes creating a site plan, sustainability, understanding risks and developing guidance for provision of Outdoor Learning. This award is worth 10 credits and you will need to provide evidence for the following units
- Supporting learning, play and development in the outdoors
- Observation and evaluation of outdoor learning
- sustainable use of natural resources
- Outdoor learning co-coordinators
